Mid-Season Status: Grand Valley State

By Logan Taylor

The Grand Valley State men’s golf program had an outstanding fall season, winning three tournament titles (Folds of Honor Challenge, the UIndy Fall Invitational, and the Nemacolin Intercollegiate) while being the runner-up at the Copperhead Classic. The Lakers concluded the fall ranked number one in the country for the first time in program history.

At the UINdy Fall Invitational, GVSU set new program records for an 18-hole team score (269), a 36-hole team score (539), and a 54-hole team score (813), finishing the tournament at -51.

On the individual side, Bryce Wheeler, Charlie Cooley, Manuel Cue, Andrew Gwilliams, and Maverick Conaway are all ranked inside the top-30 in the country. Wheeler and Cooley both tallied wins this fall, and all of them claimed at least two top-10 finishes.

GVSU will begin their spring season at the Greenwood Men’s Invitational down in South Carolina on March 9-10.

On the women’s side for the Lakers, they also produced a strong fall season. GVSU won three events outright, tied for first in another, and recorded two additional runner-up finishes. Throughout their six fall events, they never finished worse than second.

Grand Valley State won the Lady Bulldog Invitational, the Gilda’s Club Laker Fall Invite, and the Nemacolin Intercollegiate, while tying for first at the Warrior Invitational. They took home second at both the Folds of Honor Challenge and the William Beall Fall Classic.

Entering the spring season ranked No. 5 in the country, the Lakers are led by four golfers in the top-35: Charlotte Goersch, Lea Stotz, June Hsiao, and Rachael Krieger have combined to post three wins, three runner-up performances, and 12 more top-10 finishes.

Their spring season will also begin March 9-10 at the Jerry Surratt Memorial Intercollegiate, played in Monroe, North Carolina.
