Ping i59 Iron Review

by Joe Dier, Club Fitter at Miles of Golf

The PING i59 is the newest edition in PINGs iron lineup. The i59 is the replacement for the PING iblade. It offers a sleek players look and feel while offering the forgiveness of the i210. To achieve the forgiveness this club offers, while being as “blade-like” as it is, it requires some unique technology. Below is some of the tech offered in this iron:

AlumiCore Technology- An aerospace-grade aluminum insert allows approximately 30 grams of material from the center of the club to be redistributed to the perimeter in the form of toe and shaft tip weights, elevating the MOI to match that of the larger PING i210 iron.

MicroMax Milled Grooves- The precision-machined face has new MicroMax grooves for tighter spacing and a geometry that results in an average of four extra grooves to reduce fliers in the short irons and preserve spin in the long irons.

Tour-Preferred Styling- A thin topline and proper offset presents the clean, streamlined look preferred by skilled players. The hydropearl 2.0 finish repels water to ensure predictable, consistent performance from wet and dry conditions.

Higher MOI- Toe and tip weighting elevate MOI to reduce the stat area and achieve a level of forgiveness unprecedented in a forged design.

While testing these irons a couple of things jumped out at me right away.

1. I love the look. As someone who typically likes a smaller profile in an iron, it checks that box fully for me

2. I would say the i59 is more forgiving than a typical blade is, but I wouldn’t say it’s ‘forgiving.’ You might not lose as much distance on mishits as you would on some other ‘traditional’ blades but you will still lose performance.

3. The final thing that stood out to me was the feel. To me, the iron has a good feel to it, however since it is a multi-construction iron, it doesn’t have that same solid-body forged feel like a typical bladed iron has.
