U-Michigan Golfer Hailey Borja Losses Bid for U.S. Women’s Amateur Finals

By Tom Lang

Hailey Borja, a California native playing in the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Bel-Aire Country Club near Los Angeles, was defeated in the national semifinal by Megan Schofill, 22, of Monticello, Fla., currently ranked No. 21 in WAGR. Schofill, also playing in her sixth Women’s Amateur, never trailed in her semifinal match against Borja, 21, winning 2 and 1.

Borja was the 7th seed after a fine performance in the stroke play portion. The Wolverine senior defeated four other players to reach the semifinals. She also competed in the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur and is a 4-time All-Big Ten player.

Schofill, a golfer at Auburn, made four birdies and one eagle and never trailed although the match was all square at the 6th hole.

After exchanging a pair of hole-winning birdies (Schofill on 7, Borja on 13), the match would fall in Schofill’s favor for good on the par-5 14th hole, when Schofill knocked in a 15-foot eagle putt to take the lead, never relinquishing it.

“I kind of want to believe that I was a little bit of the underdog here, just some really good players out here,” Borja said afterwards. “This gave me some more confidence that I can compete with everyone.”

Schofill will take on friend-since-8th grade, Latanna Stone of LSU for the all-SEC matchup on Sunday. Stone beat Stanford super star and 2021 NCAA winner Rachel Heck.

Stone and Schofill have each played in six U.S. Women’s Amateurs, including this year. Stone played in the 2012 championship as a 10-year-old. The four semifinalists earned exemptions into the 2024 and 2025 U.S. Women’s Amateurs.
